Okanagan Valley
175 kilometres of lake, bench and desert. The Okanagan holds the large majority of British Columbia's planted vineyard and is the only true desert wine region in Canada.
Inside Okanagan Valley
Named growing areas within the region, each with its own soils, exposure and signature grapes. Sub-region assignment needs a verified address, so not every winery is placed yet.
The Okanagan runs 175 kilometres north to south, and the difference between the two ends is roughly the difference between Burgundy and the Rhône. Osoyoos in the south sits in Canada's only true desert, with heat that ripens Syrah and Cabernet. Lake Country in the north is cool enough for sparkling and aromatic whites.
Between them are eleven sub-GIs, a chain of lakes that moderates everything, and the large majority of British Columbia's planted vineyard. If you only visit one wine region in western Canada, it is this one — but treat it as several regions rather than one.
