Lake Erie North Shore

The warmest corner of the country. Shallow lake water and long sunshine ripen fuller-bodied reds than anywhere else in Ontario.

Inside Lake Erie North Shore

Named growing areas within the region, each with its own soils, exposure and signature grapes. Sub-region assignment needs a verified address, so not every winery is placed yet.

The warmest wine region in Canada sits at the bottom of Ontario, on a latitude south of Rome. Lake Erie is shallow, which means it warms up fast in spring and holds that warmth through a long autumn — and the growing season here runs weeks longer than Niagara's.

That extra time shows up in the reds. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot get properly ripe here in vintages when the rest of the province is hedging. Pelee Island, offshore and warmer still, is the southernmost vineyard land in the country.
