Where to start
Niagara Peninsula
Canada's largest planted viticultural area. The escarpment and the lake do the work here - Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and the icewine that made the country's name.
Prince Edward County
Limestone, cold winters and buried vines. Ontario's newest appellation makes the country's most convincing cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Lake Erie North Shore
The warmest corner of the country. Shallow lake water and long sunshine ripen fuller-bodied reds than anywhere else in Ontario.
Emerging Regions
Grapes grow well beyond the three appellations - Norfolk, Georgian Bay, Huron Shores and the Ottawa Valley. These wines carry the VQA Ontario designation rather than an appellation name.
Certification in Ontario is administered by Ontario Wine Appellation Authority under the VQA Ontario designation.
